48 hours before the expiration of the first deadline of the humanitarian truce between the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 , it was extended by 15 days. By way of a press release made public on Wednesday July 17, 2024, the American Department of State welcomes this new extension and invites the various actors in the region to respect this measure which aims to “silence their weapons, allow the voluntary return of displaced persons and provide humanitarian personnel with unhindered access to vulnerable populations” in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The United States welcomes the 15-day extension of the humanitarian truce committed to by parties to the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and we call on all actors in the region to respect this truce .
“We will continue to work closely with the governments of the DRC, Rwanda and Angola to support regional diplomatic efforts within the framework of the Luanda and Nairobi processes in order to achieve a lasting cessation of hostilities”, indicates the US government in the press release signed by Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the US Department of State.
