In the United Kingdom, the Banyamulenge community commemorated the victims of the 2004 Gatumba massacre by placing a memorial stone at a site designated for remembrance ceremonies.
Around the world, Banyamulenge people are marking the 20th anniversary of the massacre that took place in Gatumba, Burundi. On August 17, 2024, the Banyamulenge community in the United Kingdom held a memorial service in Salford, Manchester, to honor the victims and ensure that the history of this tragic event is never forgotten.
During the ceremony, a memorial stone was placed at the site, which will serve as a permanent reminder of the Banyamulenge who perished in Gatumba. The site will also host activities to support survivors of the massacre.
While the Banyamulenge in the UK commemorated on this date, other communities worldwide observed the anniversary on August 13, 2024, except in the United States, where the event was held on August 10, 2024.
The memorial in the UK was attended by numerous Banyamulenge, including some who traveled from the United States. The event also saw the participation of leaders from the Mahoro Peace Association and friends of the Banyamulenge community in the UK.
The Banyamulenge community continues to hold the governments of Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo accountable for the massacre, as well as the international community for its failure to deliver justice for what they consider to be an act of genocide.
The Gatumba massacre occurred on the night of August 13, 2004, when assailants attacked a refugee camp sheltering Banyamulenge, killing 166 people and injuring many others. Survivors were later relocated, but justice has yet to be served for the families of the victims.
