On Sunday, October 6, 2024, Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, publicly apologized to President William Ruto and requested one final chance to serve the Kenyan people. He made the plea during a church service held in Karen, where he expressed remorse in front of the congregation.
He said, “I want to ask my brother, President William Ruto, that if I have wronged you in any way during our work, I humbly plead with you to open your heart and forgive me.” Gachagua also apologizes on behalf of his wife, Dorcas Rigathi, stating, “If my wife has wronged you in any way, please open your heart and forgive her.”
In addition to asking President Ruto for forgiveness, Gachagua sought pardon from members of parliament and the general public, some of whom have been pushing for his impeachment.
On Friday, October 4, 2024, Kenyan citizens were given the chance to express their views on Gachagua’s impeachment, with some lawmakers accusing him of embezzling public funds and fueling ethnic divisions. Pro-Ruto MPs have led the call for his removal from office.
Following this public consultation, reports indicated that about 85% of respondents supported Gachagua’s impeachment. However, it was also noted that many Kenyans are calling for President Ruto’s resignation as well.
Despite his plea for forgiveness, Gachagua denied all accusations against him and announced the formation of a legal team to defend his innocence in court.
The tension between Deputy President Gachagua and President William Ruto stems from recent protests in Kenya, with Gachagua being accused of supporting demonstrators calling for Ruto’s resignation.
