Congolese artist Fally Ipupa, renowned for his mastery of Rumba music, was eagerly awaited by his fans in Goma for a concert scheduled on Friday, August 16, 2024. However, to their dismay, the concert did not take place, leaving many young fans frustrated and heartbroken as their dreams of seeing him perform were dashed.
The concert, expected to draw hundreds of fans, was set to be held in the Lihusi Kituku area in the western part of Goma. After a wait of over five hours, fans were informed that the performance would not happen, sparking significant anger among them.
One fan, speaking to Radio France Internationale (RFI), expressed his disappointment, saying, “We arrived here, but the artist never took the stage. Frankly, he let us down, we feel very disappointed. They just played his songs through the sound system.”
Attendees had paid between $5 and $20, depending on their seating, to enter the event. However, the concert was ultimately canceled, as confirmed by Ronsard Kamwanya Bora, one of the organizers, who cited security concerns as the reason for the delay and eventual cancellation.
He stated, “It was already dark, and the police decided that for the safety of everyone, including the artist Fally Ipupa and the public, it would be best to cancel the concert. We couldn’t guarantee the safety of the attendees at such late hours. Anyone with a ticket can come to the Lihusi village for a refund.”
On Thursday, August 15, 2024, Fally Ipupa had performed at another event at the Serena Hotel in front of about 100 Goma residents, where the concert went smoothly without any issues.
This concert was supposed to be Fally Ipupa’s return performance for his Goma fans after five years of absence due to his residence abroad and infrequent visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
