Superintendent Faustin Kapend Kamand, the Mayor of Goma in North Kivu, announced the arrest of eight suspected individuals attempting to recruit fighters for the M23 Movement. The arrests were made by the intelligence services operating within the 34th Military Region.
This announcement was made on Saturday during the weekly operation titled “Safisha Mji wa Goma” (Clean the City of Goma), as reported by Radio Okapi. Among the 15 individuals detained were a soldier from the 11th Brigade, illegal Rwandan immigrants, drug traffickers, and youths apprehended in various parts of Goma and the Nyiragongo Territory.
Superintendent Kamand stated that these individuals hail from enemy territories and secretly began recruiting fighters for the M23 Movement. The soldier from the 11th Brigade is specifically accused of distributing ammunition during the conflict.
Kamand further confirmed that Nyiragongo Territory is a known hideout for criminals who plan and execute their crimes in Goma.
“Youths, some from Nyiragongo and others from the Majengo, Kasika, and Katoy areas, admitted to having disarmed a police officer at a roadblock a week ago,” the Superintendent revealed, adding that the 34th Military Region’s intelligence services have since relocated other suspects to Kinshasa.
He emphasized that this operation was conducted covertly to prevent infiltration by those he described as enemy agents.
