The CODECO militia continues to claim the lives of civilians in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. On Tuesday, the group was accused of killing 10 civilians in an attack on a village in the Ituri province.
Jean Marie Mateso, the leader of the village where the attack took place, reported that on the night of September 16, 2024, around midnight, armed individuals entered Djugu territory in Ituri and killed 10 people from two families.
Mateso further stated that the victims were brutally beheaded, and their bodies mutilated, causing widespread fear among local residents, who fear that the militia could return at any moment.
The massacre occurred near a base of the Congolese national army, FARDC.
The CODECO militia (Cooperative for the Development of Congo) is one of the groups responsible for ongoing civilian massacres in Ituri. Originally founded as a cooperative aimed at promoting the development of Congo, CODECO has frequently clashed with the government forces, FARDC.
This recent attack follows accusations by the United Nations that CODECO has been targeting the livestock-herding Hema community in what could be classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
