In the Fizi region of South Kivu province, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Mai Mai Yakutumba militia continues to disrupt the peace, particularly targeting the Banyamulenge community.
According to local residents, the armed group has established roadblocks to monitor and control movement, preventing people from passing freely. The situation has deteriorated further following the election of Justin Bitakwira as a member of parliament representing the area. Reports indicate that Bitakwira has actively incited the Mai Mai Yakutumba militia to emerge from their hideouts and attack the Banyamulenge population.
The militia has set up roadblocks in several locations, including Makabola, Munene, Swima, Milimba, Kadegu, Mukera, Nakatete, Ilambo, Chabula, and Kanande. Residents passing through these areas are required to pay 1,000 Congolese Francs, and those who cannot pay face harsh treatment.
Additionally, the Mai Mai extort money from restaurant, hotel, and shop owners, subjecting those who refuse to comply to violence and harassment.
Locals assert that since Bitakwira assumed office, the situation has worsened dramatically. He is accused of encouraging the Mai Mai to commit acts of violence, particularly against the Banyamulenge.
Representatives of the Banyamulenge community, based on numerous reports, claim that Bitakwira’s actions are fostering a climate of hatred that could lead to outright genocide.
Justin Bihona-Hayi Bitakwira, a close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi, is notorious for spreading hate speech and making inflammatory statements that appear aimed at inciting violence against the Tutsi population in the DRC.
