The Justice Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Constant Mutamba, is facing strong opposition from judges accusing him of undermining their work.
The criticism comes from the National Union of Magistrates of the Democratic Republic of Congo (SYNAMAC). The union disagrees with the reforms introduced by the Justice Minister, arguing that they hinder their work.

The controversy arose after Minister Mutamba established a commission to oversee the conduct of judges. He justified this move as a way to combat corruption and injustice within the judiciary, claiming it would help restore order in the judicial system.
Minister Mutamba disagrees with the judges’ accusations, stating that his reforms have been endorsed by President Félix Tshisekedi and will continue to be implemented.
He said, “These reforms will continue until the people are satisfied with the justice system. Mismanagement will be eradicated entirely.”

The judges argue that Mutamba is trying to portray them as the root cause of the problems in Congo’s judiciary when, in reality, they believe the Ministry itself is at fault.
They stated, “When justice is sick, everyone involved, including the Justice Minister, is affected.”
The judges also contend that the minister should not be replacing the courts with commissions to oversee judges’ activities, as this goes against the law.
