Ninety-eight police officers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who had fled to Uganda at the beginning of last week were returned to their country on August 16, 2024.
These police officers, along with 42 civilians, had fled to the Kanungu District after the M23 armed group had captured the Ishasha border on August 4, 2024.
According to the spokesperson for the 2nd Division of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Maj Kiconco Tabaro, the police officers fled with 41 guns and 55 boxes full of ammunition.
Maj Tabaro explained that these police officers, along with the Congolese civilians, were returned to the DRC through the Mpondwe-Kasindi border.
He said, “This is not the first time we have received security personnel from the DRC after fighting in their country. We took care of them according to international law and provided them with a passage route.”
Before the police officers were repatriated on August 12, 2024, they were visited by a delegation from the DRC government, led by Lt Col Jacob Apunia, who came to verify their identities. They confirmed that they were indeed Congolese.
Maj Tabaro also explained that Congolese refugees continue to flee to Uganda, passing through areas like Kyeshero, Ishasha, Bunagana, and Nkuringo in the Kisoro District.
As these Congolese enter Uganda, Uganda is tightening security at its borders to prevent any wrongdoers from entering the country.
